NEWS
Ellen Johnson is HLA’s new President!
Please join us in welcoming HLA’s new president, Ellen Johnson. The Board elected Ellen for this position in anticipation of Ed Sullivan’s sabbatical in the fall of 2009. She is a founding member of HLA and an attorney with Legal Aid Services of Oregon. We are indebted to Ed Sullivan for his years of leadership and wish him the best on his sabbatical.
The 2009 Housing Land Advocates Conference, cosponsored by HLA and the Oregon Chapter of the American Planning Association (OAPA) was a success. The all-day event was filled to capacity and featured presentations from planners, architects and sustainability experts and three separate panel discussions.

Advocacy Activities
HLA is hitting the ground running in 2010. The Board is focusing on opportunities to provide public comment on local land use planning strategies including Metro’s Making the Greatest Place plans for the Portland metropolitan area, and participating in local periodic review processes throughout the state.
Also, HLA will be participating in the public input portion of the Periodic Review process for the City of Keizer, The Dalles, Hermiston, Portland, and Forest Grove. Periodic Review provides local jurisdictions with the opportunity to update their comprehensive plans based on many variables including a housing needs analysis. HLA’s comments will support expanded opportunities for these jurisdictions to set aside land for affordable housing development.
